Hello to all

Hello to all,

I hope that each of you had a nice Thanksgiving and wish each of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Last night, I submitted my application to UC Davis. I wrote one of my personal statements on my position as the dairy princess. I would like to share it with you. The prompt was, "Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person that you are?"

Here is what I wrote:

The three of us contestants waited nervously behind the stage, anticipating the results. We had worked so hard on our applications and had been in interviews all day preparing for this moment. The award was the most prestigious honor in the Eel River Valley, the title of District One Dairy Princess. When my name was called, I was so enthralled that I sprinted to the stage. It was one of the most remarkable moments in my life. I looked out into the crowd and I saw my parents, who are my role models and the two most inspiring people in my life, beaming with joy and pride. The audience seemed to be happy for my accomplishment and it was at that moment I knew, that I was going to become a genuine Dairy Princess.

Although it sounds peculiar, the Dairy Princess is an important job. As a spokeswoman for the dairy industry in her area, she goes to meetings for the dairymen and California Milk Advisory Board. In the spring, she presents to classrooms around her district and informs the children about the magnitude of the dairy and agricultural industries in California. She attends fairs around the state, serving dairy products and handing out ribbons for dairy shows. Everywhere she goes, she is held as a role model for young children and a beacon of hope in times of the dairy industry's turmoil.

Even though this year has been a trying period for the dairymen in Humboldt County, I have the honorable duty of inspiring these men as well as the general public into believing the dairy industry will return to its glory days. Also, I take great joy in promoting, advocating and simply discussing the agricultural industry. It is quite rewarding when you are the first person to tell a child where milk comes from. These two reasons are why I am authentically pleased to be privileged with the title of Dairy Princess. I am proud to be able to inform California about the importance of dairies and the products that they offer. Along with this, I delight in being a positive encouragement to the local dairymen and ranchers.

The respectable position of District One Dairy Princess relates to who I am because I have always been involved in agriculture. I love being challenged and my role as Dairy Princess has given me the chance to learn public relations skills as well as give me the opportunity to discuss agriculture with people. My whole life I have lived on a 200+ acre ranch and I have shown dairy cattle for six years. Being a member of the local dairy and agriculture industries makes the responsibility of being the District One Dairy Princess a perfect fit for me. Nothing gives me more gratification and honor than the satisfying task of enlightening the public about agriculture.

Cordially,

Kerilyn Ambrosini

District 1 Dairy Princess
